MOMENTS OF MIRTH - 1
Memories of life at Saint Anthony's College - that great College by the banks of the mighty Mahaveli - are always worth recollecting. Memories with a lacing of humour make the reminiscing always pleasant, sometimes sad, and very nostalgic. Parting the veil of time I was swept away on a tsunami of memories. The Mahaveli Ganga has its source in the foothills of Adam's Peak and flows past College on its journey towards the ocean - it also flowed into the canyons of my mind and the memories and the river will live on forever.
FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW
1934 was a path breaking year for the College and a validation of the school’s excellence. Twelve students sat the examination that year of whom six obtained first division passes, and six obtained second division passes. Their names which should be emblazoned in letters of gold in the field of education, will be mentioned in this article. Paraphrasing the title of the book, we should “Carve their names with pride”.
THE LILIES OF THE MAHAWELI
Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts - and we are never the same. And the Matrons and all those who served in College, who have been mentioned here, did just that. For them, there can be no goodbyes. Because to Anthonians, wherever they are, they will always be in our hearts.
THE KATU BRIDGE
The bridges of friendship we build at College have brought us thus far. As to where the roads may lead in the future, we will cross that bridge when we come to it.
MR. B.L. FERNANDO A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
He knew the art of 'Student psychology' - he knew how to get to the heart of a student and never lost sight of the human element.
HOW'S THAT? - A SYNOPSIS OF CRICKET AT the COLLEGE SPANNING A PERIOD OF ELEVEN YEARS
He knew the art of 'Student psychology' - he knew how to get to the heart of a student and never lost sight of the human element.
THE STORY OF ANTONIAN CRICKET: An extraordinary journey
In his foreword to Afzal Laphir's book "The Story of Antonian cricket", Franklyn Amerasinghe opened the batting and excelled in capturing the sentiments of all Anthonians - past and present - in lauding the author for the skillful manner in which he has turned words into memories through this memorable and plausible masterpiece. He has said it all, and in writing this simple appreciation I as the last man in, can only in a literal sense gild the lily.
FROM THE HINTERLAND TO THE WORLD THROUGH ST. ANTHONY'S COLLEGE KANDY
This story has its genesis in the rural hinterland of Akurana nestling in nature's serenity about ten kilometers from Kandy.
CARVE THEIR NAMES WITH PRIDE
While we carve the names of that elite team with pride, the unsung "Anthonians" who were at the grounds witnessing cricket played at its best should not be forgotten.
NIGHT MOVES - A NIGHT IN THE LIFE OF A BOARDER
Boarders will remember the numerous occasions when there were power failures at college. Power blackouts resulted in chaos and the reactions varied from one extreme to the other depending on where you found yourself in the dark!
THEY ALSO SERVE - A tribute to Edmund the ‘lab boy’
Today, tribute and congratulations are due to another iconic member of this legendary band of workers who still continues to serve our Alma Mater with pride.
To Matron with Love
Anthonians in unison, wish Mrs. Griffs a very happy 100th birthday and may she continue to enjoy life’s blessings and all it has to offer.
GLORY DAYS - the legend that was TOM Deen
Apart from his tearaway reputation as a bowler, he could also swing a mean bat to destroy any bowling attack!
STEVEN CHARLIE AND MICHAEL - BROTHERS IN ARMS
All three were hostellers and members of The Double Blue House. They were tall, well built with well rounded physiques and blessed with inborn skills at ball games.
THE JOURNEY'S END
I joined St. Anthony's at the tender age of six in January 1951, and the destination and the journey held no interest for me ! From the genesis of life as a boarder, I found it was a challenge.
A MEMORY OF MURDER
Another English Planter Mr. E.W. Woodhouse has left an account which states " Young Morgan was shot by a villager as he negotiated the zig zag bends in the road with some currency notes stuffed in his breast pocket! There was a giant tree by the road and the assassins fired at him hiding behind the trunk of this large tree.
MOMENTS OF MIRTH - 2
Any Hollywood writer of comedy scripts would have come up with box office record breakers had he or she spent some time at St.Anthony's College, especially in the boarding. Humourous incidents, hilarious escapades and anecdotes were an integral part of boarding life, and after all these years, they still live in the collective Anthonian memory.
The Roads We Travel
There is also a strong Antonian link with this Company. Mihindu Keerthiratne was the architect of the Nilaveli Beach Hotel and Tangerine Beach Hotels.
MEMORY DOWN LANE
Permit me to turn back the pages of time and take our minds back to the third week in January 1951 when Chris Duff-Tytler and I were in "The Rainbow Cottage". This was my first year in college at 6 years of age.
